What is Brazenist?
Jun 13, 2021“What is it? Brazenist, it’s not even a word.”
This is what everyone says to me when I tell them the name of my company.
Here’s the deal, the word brazen kinda gets a bad wrap. When people hear it they often think of carelessness or disregard for others. But that's now how we see it. Here's the Google definition:
"Bold and without shame; endures an embarrassing or difficult situation by behaving with apparent confidence and lack of shame."
I'm reclaiming brazen. Because to me being brazen doesn't mean you're thoughtless or uncaring about others. It means you respectfully disregard the naysayers, the haters, your own limiting beliefs, and the societal boundaries that have been placed in front of you.
When I decided to leave rural Kansas for university when I was 18 years old - I was the first in my family to go to college, the first in my family to leave southeast Kansas, or Kansas at all - for me, that was my first act of living brazen.
My grandmother was frightened for me, my dad didn't understand why I needed to go all the way to Boston, and almost everyone I knew figured I couldn't hack it in the big city and I’d make my way back home.
It was a rocky road. Boston was a big transition for me...but somehow I found myself chasing my biggest dreams and goals over the rainbow, around the world, and back again. I ended up studying abroad three times, heading to grad school in Ohio, then to China for a year, then back to Boston for a few years, then sailed around the world on a ship with 700 college students, then to South Dakota, then Colorado, and finally found myself back in the heartland in Kansas City (Only to leave again for 16 months to be a digital nomad in 27 countries on 4 continents).
Here’s the deal, being brazen isn’t about traveling the world like me, or starting a company, or ending a relationship, or making lots of money, or having a huge social media following. It’s not about achieving more than everyone else. It's about achieving more for yourself than you ever thought was possible.
And, frankly, I think we're all a little bit brazen. So let's do it on purpose. Like a Sociologist is an expert in society, or a Psychologist is an expert in all things human behavior, or a Feminist has deeply held beliefs about gender equality...Let’s be Brazenists. Let's be scholars, practitioners, and professionals in what it means to live BRAZEN. Let's intentionally find our limits and bust right through them. Let's brazenly pursue a life we can't even imagine.
Brazenist - the art and science of brazenly going after your dreams.
